For those who prefer to travel independently, Le Markstein is easily accessible by road.
From the Alsace plain (Mulhouse, Colmar), head for Guebwiller or Cernay, then climb the RD430 towards Le Grand Ballon / Le Markstein.
From Lorraine (Épinal / Remiremont), access is via La Bresse or the Lorraine side of the crests, via the Route des Crêtes and then the Markstein junction (to be adapted according to snow conditions and opening of the passes).
The roads offer superb panoramic views of the Vosges valleys and Alsace. Car-sharing is highly recommended to reduce your carbon footprint.

During the winter months, find out about traffic conditions on the the Route des Crêtes and access via the Vosges passes, and prefer the main routes via the valleys (Cernay / Guebwiller → RD430 → Markstein) when the weather is tricky. Remember to check your compulsory equipment (winter tyres / chains) before setting off.
Outdoor car parks at the foot of the Domaine du Markstein Grand-ballon (snow front), which are generally free or charge a small fee depending on the season. Some nearby accommodation has its own car park.
Mulhouse ~1 h - Colmar ~1 h 10-1 h 20 - Strasbourg ~2 h - Epinal ~1 h 45-2 h - Basel (~Switzerland) ~1 h 30-1 h 45 (depending on traffic, weather and road conditions).
Charging stations are available on the plain (Cernay, Guebwiller, neighbouring towns) as well as in certain mountain villages and nearby accommodation. Payment is generally by credit card or dedicated application, via QR code on site. Even though Markstein Grand-Ballon does not have a station directly on site, the train remains a practical solution to access the station.
The most convenient TGV / TER stations for getting to the Vosges mountains on the Alsatian side. From Mulhouse or Colmar, The journey continues by hire car, taxi/VTC or regional bus to the valley villages, then by road to Le Markstein.
