When should you go to Montgenèvre?
- Winter : From December to early April depending on altitude. Quality snow cover thanks to the altitude of the village (~1 860 m), the’domain orientation and artificial snow equipment, various tracks on Montgenèvre & Monts de la Lune, links to the’Italy (Claviere, sector Monti della Luna) depending on opening. Ski, snowshoes, sleds, beginners' area, nordic skiing and cosy après-ski Montgenèvre embodies the charm of the Southern Alps, between sun and snow.
- Summer : From June to September, the hiking, at MOUNTAIN BIKE, to legendary passes (Montgenèvre, Izoard, Galibier...), to high altitude lakes and the villages of the upper Durance valley and Clarée. The resort retains its peaceful mountain, with summer entertainment, 9-hole golf course, bike park and many outdoor activities.
How to get to Montgenèvre
Before reaching the station, plan your journey: the route is accessible all year round, but snow tyres or channels are mandatory during the winter period (loi Montagne).
Getting to the resort by car
For those who prefer to travel autonomy, Montgenèvre is easily accessible by road. From the France, join Briançon by the N94 (since Gap / Embrun), then follow the D1091 in the direction of’Italy to Montgenèvre. From the’Italy, Access is via the Suse Valley and the motorway A32 (output Oulx), then by the SS24 towards the Montgenèvre pass. Well-maintained road offering superb panoramic views over the valleys of the Durance and Dora Riparia. Le carpooling is highly recommended to reduce your carbon footprint.
GPS point (winter) :
Between the 1st November and the 31 Marchthe loi Montagne imposes snow tyres or chains/socks in the vehicle. In difficult winter conditions, find out about the’road conditions (Montgenèvre pass Italian connections Briançon ↔ Oulx) before you set off, and take the main route via Briançon or Oulx rather than small secondary passes.
Outdoor car parks at the foot of the piste (de Montgenèvre 1860) and car parks around residences / hotels, generally paying in high season and free or reduced in summer. From free inter-neighbourhood shuttles allow you to travel between different areas of the resort and certain valley car parks, depending on the season.
Briançon ~20 min - Oulx (Italy) ~30-35 min - Gap ~1 h 45 - Grenoble ~2 h 15-2 h 30 - Turin ~1 h 45-2 h 00 (depending on traffic and weather conditions). These times are indicative and may vary considerably in the middle of winter (snow, holiday traffic).
From charging stations are available in the valley (Briançon and surrounding areas) and in or near the resort (car parks and fully-equipped accommodation, depending on sector). Payment generally by credit card or dedicated application, via QR code on site. Ask your host or the’Tourist Office before you arrive to find the most convenient terminal.
Coming by train
Even though Montgenèvre does not have its own station, the train is a good way of getting to the resort if you don't have your own car.
Terminus of the SNCF line since Valence / Grenoble / Gap, with Intercity night trains since Paris at certain times of the year. From Briançon, the ascent to Montgenèvre is by regional bus, shuttle, taxi or VTC (≈20-30 min).
Italian station served by TGV and fast trains since Turin and sometimes Lyon / Paris. Once in Oulx shuttles and station bus (seasonal workers), taxis or car rentals to Montgenèvre via the SS24 and the Montgenèvre pass.
Other valley stations with connections TER. Transfer to regional bus or car to Briançon then Montgenèvre.
From the stations, Montgenèvre can be reached via seasonal buses, taxis/VTC or car hire, depending on your needs and arrival time.
