Côte d’Opale and the site of the Two Caps

Between Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer, the Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez dominate a coastline of cliffs, dunes and long beaches. Wissant and Wimereux invite you to slow down in front of the sea, while Le Touquet-Paris-Plage and Berck-sur-Mer extend the getaway to the south. The Vélomaritime also allows you to discover several sections by bike.

The Coastal Path and La Vélomaritime offer two complementary perspectives on the Côte d’Opale. On foot, the viewpoints reveal the cliffs and dunes, and when visibility permits, the English coast. On bike, the route connects ports, seaside resorts, and large stretches of open sea.

Somme Bay and the Picard Coast

Around Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the bay changes its appearance depending on the light and the tides. The paths, the natural spaces of Marquenterre and the tip of the Hourdel invite you to take the time to observe. Further south, Cayeux-sur-Mer, Ault and Mers-les-Bains form another sequence of pebbles, cliffs and seaside villas.

The Parc du Marquenterre has trails and observatories dedicated to bird watching. The guided tour of the bay offers a different experience, organized according to the tides, while the Chemin de fer de la baie de Somme connects several stations in a retro atmosphere.

Lille, Roubaix and the metropolitan area

In Lille, the Grand’Place, the streets of Vieux-Lille and the museums create a weekend where architecture accompanies every stroll. In Roubaix, La Piscine transforms a former Art Deco building into a museum, while the other cities in the metropolitan area unveil their industrial heritage, cultural venues and excellent restaurants.

The Palais des Beaux-Arts, La Piscine and Villa Cavrois illustrate three facets of the metropolitan heritage: the large collections, the conversion of an Art Deco building and the modernist architecture. The markets, the former derelict areas transformed and the cultural venues complete the discovery of the neighborhoods.

Amiens and the orchards

The Cathedral of Amiens marks the silhouette of the city, but the discovery also continues along the water. The gardens and canals form a landscape of gardens and canals, near the Saint-Leu district and the banks of the Somme. This urban stop can easily be combined with a trip to the Bay of Somme or the sites in the eastern part of the department.

A boat tour allows you to enter the heart of the orchards and better understand this landscape shaped by horticulture. The Jules Verne House, the Saint-Leu neighborhood, and the paths along the Somme then offer very different tours just a short walk from the cathedral.

Arras, Lens and the paths of memory

In Arras, the plazas lined with facades and the belfry set the tone for a heritage visit. In Lens, the Louvre-Lens and the mining basin heritage tell other chapters of the region. In the surrounding area, Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, Vimy and the sites of remembrance of the First World War invite to an attentive and respectful discovery of the places.

The Wellington Quarry allows us to approach the history of the First World War from an underground perspective. Around Lens, the tunnels and former mining sites can be explored on foot and offer a different reading of the landscape. The memory routes connect cemeteries, memorials and museums across several territories.

Chantilly, Compiègne and Pierrefonds

In the Oise, Chantilly combines a castle, collections and a landscaped domain. Compiègne opens onto a palace and a vast forest, while the towers of Pierrefonds appear amidst the trees. Senlis and Beauvais complete this discovery with their ancient streets, buildings and museums. The department thus allows for alternating visits and walks in the countryside.

The forests of Chantilly and Compiègne extend the visit with hiking trails, bike rides, and horseback riding routes. The Grandes Écuries de Chantilly recall the place of the horse in the identity of the territory, while Pierrefonds offers a medieval silhouette entirely different from the neighboring princely residences.

Laon, Saint-Quentin and the Thiérache

Perched above the plain, Laon reveals itself between ramparts, ancient streets and a cathedral. Saint-Quentin showcases its Art Deco heritage and its marshes, while the Thiérache combines a wooded landscape, green lanes and fortified churches. Further south, the surroundings of Château-Thierry overlook the hills and the viticultural landscapes of the Marne valley.

The Way of the Ladies and the Dragon Cave shed light on another aspect of the department’s history. The green lanes of the Thiérache, the marshes of the Isle at Saint-Quentin, and the hillsides of the Marne Valley then allow for alternating heritage, walks, and the discovery of the landscapes.

Restaurants and regional flavors

Flemish carbonade, Welsh carbonade, maroilles flammes, picardian ficelle or seafood specialties: the specialties vary between the interior and the coast. In Lille as in smaller towns, the bistros offer convivial cuisine. The markets, artisan breweries, cheese shops and patisseries offer other opportunities to discover the region through the food.

The discovery can continue at the breweries, producers of maroilles and the coastal markets. Local beers, cheeses, pastries and seafood tell different stories of savoir-faire depending on the departments. A visit to a tavern will finally allow you to discover several regional recipes in a characteristic setting of the North.
